Enhancing Public Participation in MEA Reporting
The public plays an important role in implementing MEAs and other environmental laws. However, the experience of public involvement in national reporting is still limited. In order to address this issue, UNEP, in cooperation with EcoPravo-Kyiv (a Ukrainian Environmental Law NGO), the Government of Ukraine, and relevant MEA Secretariats, undertakes a project to promote public participation in drafting national reports on the implementation of MEAs in Ukraine. The project aims to promote public participation in the preparation of national reports regarding the implementation of selected MEAs in Ukraine (namely Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Convention on the Protection of the Black Sea Against Pollution, through the identification of approaches to public participation in national reporting processes, development of recommendations, and dissemination of the project outcomes and outputs among NGOs and other stakeholders in Ukraine, as well as other Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) countries.
