Throughout the AEO-2 process, the AMCEN Inter-Agency Technical Committee
(IATC) provided policy guidance. The committee reviewed and approved the
proposed structure of the report in March 2004. In February 2005, IATC endorsed
the draft recommendations of the report for approval by the AMCEN special
session which met in Dakar in March 2005. The final draft report was presented
to IATC for a final review and approval for publication in November 2005.
The process also involves other UN agencies, i.e. UNDP,
the UN Economic Commission
for Africa (ECA), the
African Development Bank (AfDB), the
African Union (AU) and regional economic bodies, i.e. Southern
African Development Community (SADC), Intergovernmental
Authority on Development (IGAD), Economic
Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Permanent
Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), AMU
and the Indian Ocean
Commission (IOC), among others.
Capacity-building is an integral part of the AEO process. Through collaboration
with experts and stakeholders at multiple levels, the process has enhanced
ability at the national level to undertake effective state of the environment
assessments, in a way that is policy relevant by.
- Harnessing professional skills and methodologies for analysing
data and generating policy-oriented and targeted environmental information,
and for integrating such information into sustainable development decision
making.
- Supporting and catalysing networking and the development of the infrastructure
and support mechanisms for a comprehensive and harmonized national sustainable
development data foundation using the integrated
environmental assessments and reporting methodology.
