Clean Up the World

Clean Up the World Weekend
16 - 18 September 2011

Think Globally, Act Locally
Clean Up the World is a community based environmental campaign that inspires and empowers communities from every corner of the globe to clean up, fix up and conserve their local environment. In conjunction with Primary Partner, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Clean Up the World brings businesses, community groups, schools and governments together in a range of activities and programs that positively improve local environments. Since the first campaign in 1993, Clean Up the World has inspired an estimated 35 million volunteers in 130 countries each year to take action.Read More

Activities

Clean Up the World promotes community action as the key to long-term environmental change. The campaign welcomes involvement from all nations and participating organisations range from individual groups working independently in their local community, to national initiatives where the work of many groups is coordinated across an entire nation.

Clean Up the World encourages and supports community based activities year-round, while the third weekend in September (Clean Up the World Weekend) serves as a global celebration of Members' environmental actions and achievements.

UNEP and Clean Up the World

"Clean Up the World encapsulates one fundamental idea: how to mobilize people around the world to take on the practical challenge of environmental sustainability. It sounds a very ambitious objective, but it is in our cities, our gardens, our public parks and on the beaches that each one of us can begin to make a difference."
Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director

UNEP and Clean Up the World have worked together since the campaign's inception and are continually strengthening the partnership. UNEP supports and promotes Clean Up the World through a range of initiatives including distribution of its campaign and media materials, public endorsement of the campaign, access to worldwide environment and community networks and technical information. In 2011, the Clean Up the World theme is "Our Place... Our Planet... Our Responsibility". To learn more about the UNEP and Clean Up the World relationship visit the website.
