UNEP RELEASES UPDATED CD-ROM THAT SUPPORTS DEVELOPING COUNTRY COMPLIANCE WITH MONTREAL PROTOCOL

Paris/Nairobi, March 2001 - UNEP's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (UNEP DTIE) in Paris has released an updated version of the OzonAction Strategic Information System (OASIS) 2000, an electronic reference tool that supports compliance with the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This CD-ROM provides developing countries with the strategic information they need to make good decisions about technical and policy issues.

OASIS 2000, was officially launched by Klaus Toepfer, UNEP's Executive Director, on 14 December 2000 during the 12th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol, held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Developed by the UNEP DTIE OzonAction Programme under the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol, OASIS is an easy-to-use reference system that provides essential resource material related to the implementation of the Protocol. Although it is designed primarily for National Ozone Units (NOUs), industry associations, and enterprises in developing countries, OASIS 2000 will be a useful information resources for anyone who is directly or indirectly involved in the phase out of ozone depleting substances (ODS).

This release includes updated and expanded information content and features improved search options that enable users to find what they are seeking more quickly and efficiently. OASIS 2000 helps users better understand how to meet the technical and policy challenges that their countries, businesses or organizations face under the Montreal Protocol. It helps you answer the following strategic questions:

§ Sources of Assistance: Who has the expertise and information I need to establish, implement and manage my organization's ODS phase out programme, and how can I reach them?

§ Alternative Technologies: Have other companies and organizations successfully phased out ODS, and what was their experience? Where can I obtain alternative technologies? What types of projects are being approved by the Multilateral Fund? Which ozone-friendly technologies can I deploy?

§ Policies, Procedures and Guidelines: What are the Montreal Protocol requirements? What policy instruments are available to phase out ODS? What have other countries done? What policy options are available to help implement the Protocol?

Highlights of OASIS 2000 include:
