Clean Up the World Weekend, 16-18 September 2005

The 2005 Clean Up the World Weekend, 16-18 September, will be an opportunity for Members organisations and volunteers from around the world to celebrate year round environmental achievements and will be a time of action as volunteers get physical and clean up their local area.

Clean Up the World, held in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme, mobilises over 30 million volunteers from more than 100 countries annually to clean up, fix up and conserve their local environment.

In 2005 Clean Up the World is promoting "Green Cities, Green Communities" in support of UNEP's World Environment Day theme of "Green Cities - Plan for the Planet!" This theme is significant as the 21st century marks the first time in human history that the majority of the world's population will live in urban areas. Today, cities consume 75% of the planet's natural resources.

Clean Up the World encourages participants to think about practical ways to create greener cities and communities, for example activities that will reduce waste, decrease litter, conserve energy, protect precious water and energy resources, and encourage sustainable development.

Motivated by a common concern for the environment, millions of people across the globe will clean up their cities and local communities as part of Clean Up the World 2005.
