Sport and Peace Forum

Nairobi, 12 july 2004 - Thirty-five participants from conflict and post conflict African countries are meeting at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi to discuss how sport can contribute to peace making in the region. The Forum aims to help the National Olympic Committee of participating countries to define their role in promoting peace in their countries and will identify potential projects related to the promotion of peace through sport in the participating countries.

The Forum has representatives from Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Sudan, South Africa and Zimbabwe. It was addressed by the Minister of Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services of Kenya, H.E. Hon. Ochilo Ayacko and representatives from the United Nations including the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Ethiopia and Eritrea, Ambassador Legwaila Joseph Legwaila.
