Plant for the Planet

The Plant for the Planet campaign was launched in February 2003, by the Unites Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in an effort to discourage deforestation, by inspiring communities to start major forestation projects in their region, as well as encouraging these communities to develop a culture of planting and caring for trees.

Plant for the Planet targets different members and sectors of a community, but its main targets are schools and children aged 14 and under all around the world. This is because not only does the campaign want these schools and communities to adopt specific areas in their cities and communities to plant and care for trees as their environmental projects, but Plant for the Planet also encourages schools to develop tree nurseries to sustain the tree planting efforts for five years.

Plant for the Planet started in Kenya by initiating activities with schools in Nairobi and others parts of the country by assembling schools to plant thousands of trees twice a year, in November and April.

Plant for the Planet campaigns have also been launched in Bangladesh and Ghana. By 2008, it is expected that between one and five million trees will be planted by each of the participating countries.
