The Green Ribbon Awards
Environmental leaders in New Zealand were recognized today at the 18th Green Ribbon Awards in Wellington. The 2008 winners of the Green Ribbon Awards reflect the many different areas in which New Zealanders contribute to reducing the impacts of climate change and assisting the country in becoming a sustainable nation.
The Green Ribbon Awards recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals, organizations and businesses to sustaining, protecting and enhancing New Zealand's environment.
This year's 18th Green Ribbon Awards is being promoted in conjunction with New Zealand's hosting of World Environment Day on 5 June. The Awards, which are usually held on World Environment Day, this year took place on Tuesday 3 June in the Wellington Town Hall to mark the beginning of World Environment Day celebrations throughout the country.
As World Environment Day focuses on Climate Change, the award categories have been updated to reflect the many different areas in which Kiwis contribute to reducing the impacts of Climate Change. The categories have also been extended from six to nine in recognition of the huge number and high calibre of dedicated environmental champions who deserve to be honoured for their efforts.
The categories are as follows:

Sustainable Land Use
Making a Difference to Household Sustainability
Community Action for the Environment ? Young People
Community Action for the Environment ? Volunteers and Not-for-Profit Organizations
Businesses Making a Difference
Environment in the Spotlight
Innovative Solutions for the Environment
Lifetime Commitment to the Environment.
