UNEP Promotes Sports and Environment Initiative in Kenya
Nairobi, 16 October - The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on the weekend of 17 October will host an annual event entitled Play for the Planet in Mombasa, Kenya. This event brings together hundreds of children from schools and communities to engage in sport and environmental activities, such as clean ups, environmental awareness seminars and tree planting.
The inaugural event held in conjunction with Nairobi University in 2003 managed to attract over 4000 participants. This year, Play for the Planet will bring together corporate partners, including the British Council, schools and young people to plant 25,000 trees and participate in a corporate challenge as well as to promote environmental awareness.
As in the previous two years, UNEP is cooperating with the Mavuno Michezo to organise this year's event. Mavuno Michezo is a non-political society with members in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. The society organizes sporting events, environmental and charitable activities reaching out to under privileged neighbourhoods in the country. This event therefore aims to raise funds and to support environmental and philanthropic activities around Kenya by Mavuno Michezo.
Overall, the Play for the Planet initiative aims to use the power of sport to provide a positive environment for interaction for young people and corporate organizations in Kenya.
