Seoul (Republic of Korea), 7 June 2010 - The LG Display Company, a leading firm of electronic monitors and headquarted in Korea, on Monday announced that it will participate with client firms in the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign. As part of this initiative, LG Display signed an agreement with UNEP to participate in the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign in Busan. UN Under-Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner and LG Display IT Business Manager and Vice President Mr. Hyun Hwoi Ha were among those present at the signing ceremony.
"Planting trees touches an action-orientated nerve in each one of us and connects us to the natural world. The act of planting gives expression to concerns about environmental degradation and how we can help pave the way for long term sustainability. It is a way of companies signalling they wish to be part of the sustainability solution, which is also about creating a shift from short-term profit to long-term value creation," said Mr. Steiner. LG Display Vice President Mr. Hyun Hwoi Ha said, "It is very meaningful that we have this opportunity to participate in a global tree planting campaign to improve the environment with our client firms. LG Display will continue to develop environmentally friendly materials and products to play a leading role in protecting our planet."
Trees are critical factors in human life and help conserve soil and water, control avalanches, prevent desertification, protect coastal areas and stabilize sand dunes. Forests cover 30 percent of the total land area and absorb carbon dioxide. But deforestation continues at an alarming rate - about 13 million hectares per year, and is caused by the conversion of forests into agricultural land, illegal logging, the production of wood for industrial needs as well as consumer demand and population growth LG Display created a USD 1 million green fund in connection with the campaign. And LG Display has decided to support NGOs in efforts to plant trees in regions that need a forestation such as India through October, together with Dell, Lenovo, Acer and LG Electronics which are major clients for LCD monitor panels
