E - Co-ordination between the United Nations medium-term plan and the system-wide medium-term environment programme

31. In paragraph 12 of its decision SS.1/3 of the system-wide medium-term environment programme for the period 1990-1995, the Governing Council expressed its concern about the need to maintain maximum possible co-ordination between the United Nations medium-term plan and the system-wide medium-term environment programme, in the light of General Assembly resolutions 2997(XXVII) of 15 December 1972, which gives the United Nations Environment Programme a co-ordinating role on environmental policies and proogrammes with the United Nations system, and resolutions 4/215 of 21 December 1987, by which the Assembly extended the United Natios medium-term pan for the period 1984-1989 to include 1990-1991.

32. In the saem vein, by paragraph 4 of decision SS.1/7 on proposed revisions to the global programme on the environment of the extended United Nations medium-term plan for the period 1984-1989, the Governing Council recommended to the General Assembly that the global programme on the environment of the United Nations medium-term plan beginning in 1992 should be structured along the lines of the system-wide medium-term environment programme to ensur uniformity of content and to facilitate co-ordnation of the envornmental activities being undertaken by the United Nations system in the light of Assembly reslutions 42/86 and 42/187 of 11 December 1987.
