I REGISTRATION Registration of participants All participants are requested to register on arrival at the registration desk. Registration will be open on Thursday, 1 February and Friday, 2 February from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., Saturday, 3 Feb and Sunday, 4 February from 2.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m., Monday, 5 Feb through Wednesday, 8 Feb from 8.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. and on Thursday, 8 February until noon. Delegates are reminded that the list of participants is based on the information provided by them at the time of registration and that inclusion in the list of participants is conditional upon official registration. Registration forms:All participants from governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations as well as special guests are requested to fill out the registration forms and send them to the secretariat. The registration forms for participants from governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations as well as those for special guests are found at this website. Visa applications: For participants coming from those countries which have no Kenyan mission, arrangements are being made with the Kenyan authority in Nairobi to provide visas at the air port on arrival. Participants from such countries are, therefore, urged to provide duly filled registration forms to the secretariat as soon as possible to enable the timely processing of the visas. BadgesBadges will be issued to participants upon registration. For security reasons, all delegates are requested to wear the badges at all times. List of participants A printout of the relevant entries for each delegation will be handed out in the meeting room as soon as possible. Participants are requested to check the entries carefully and hand in any corrections to the registration desk as early as possible. Credentials In accordance with the rules of procedure of the Governing Council (rules 16 and 17), delegates are requested to hand in their credentials at the registration desk on the first day of the session. Credentials will be examined by the Bureau of the Governing Council and approved on the Council on the basis of a report of the Bureau. Any questions regarding credentials should be addressed to the Secretary of the Council (Ms. B. Miller ext. 3411). NGO registration and other facilities NGO’s should register at the NGO desk, located in the delegates entrance lobby. NGO registration will open from Wednesday, 31 January until Friday, 10 February from 10.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. All NGO queries should be directed to the desk or contact Mr. A. Krishnan on ext. 3870. A dedicated meeting/working room has been allocated to NGO’s (UNESCO Conference room C-224). Media registration Media representatives are requested to register at the Media Center located at the lower level of the library. Please have a valid press card and letter from your editor to facilitate the accreditation process. Nairobi based journalists will be given GC badges upon presentation of their current UN security-passes. For more information please contact Ms. A. Shah on ext.3089.
II MEETINGS Meeting rooms The following meeting rooms have been allocated to the regional groups and other groups and for additional facilities:
Reservation of meeting rooms Meeting rooms are available for Regional Groups everyday before 9.30 a.m. Due to various drafting groups and special and side events, availability during lunch hours and after the regular meetings needs to be confirmed on a daily basis with Ms. S. Mutarabayire, ext. 3397. Alternative meeting rooms may have to be provided. Interpretation Simultaneous interpretation will be available at the meetings of the plenary and the Committee of the Whole in the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. No interpretation will be available for regional or group meetings. Documentation Official GC documents will be available at the document distribution center behind the registration desk from noon Sunday, 4 February. Thereafter, the center will remain open everyday of the session from 8 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Special tables are placed in the corridors near Conference rooms1 and 2 for non-official documentation and information materials. Journal A daily journal will be issued during GC. Any delegation wishing to have an announcement included in the daily Journal should contact the Secretary of the Council (Ms. B. Miller ext. 3411). The Secretary of the GC should also be contacted on the order of speeches for the Plenary Sessions from 5-7 February 2001. Bilateral meetings with the Executive Director Delegates wishing to have bilateral meetings with the Executive Director should call the Assistant to the Executive Director, Ms. C. Musonera (ext. 4007) or contact the Executive Assistant to the Executive Director, Mr. E. Blencowe on ext. 4148. GC on internet The proceedings of the GC can be followed life on internet at www.unep.orgIII SERVICES FOR DELEGATES Video Conferencing Video conferencing facilities are available to delegates at a rate of $ 60 per hour in room CW 115, located behind conference room 1. For bookings please contact Conference Services, Ms. E. Mutua, ext. 3394 or Ms. W. Omenda, ext. 3391. Internet Café Free internet access is available from the Internet Café, located behind the Coffee Lounge at the upper concourse. Publications Recent UNEP publications are on display in the lower concourse. Order forms, with prices indicated, will be available next to the display cabinets. Njoroge, ext. 3393, and Ms. A. Shah in the Media Center, ext. 3089. Exhibitions Exhibitions presenting various aspects of UNEP’s programme activities are on display in the upper lobby. UNEP’s Photo Competition "Focus On Your World" will also be exhibited. Video programming and international news feeds (BBC World and CNN) will run on a continuous basis. Various local artists will exhibit their work in the concourses. For more information contact Mr. S. Jackson ext. 3332. Commissary Access to the UN Commissary will be extended for the duration of the session to all heads of government delegations, as well as heads of the delegations of the United Nations and inter-governmental organizations after they have officially registered their participation. The Commissary is situated on the lower concourse. Commissary passes will be provided at the Registration Desk. The Commissary will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. UN Gift Center The United Nations Gift Center, situated adjacent to the Commissary, will be open from 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. It has a large and varied list of items available, including souvenirs, mementos and gift items from different United Nations agencies as well as from different countries. Hotel reservations, airport transfers and transport for delegates Transport for delegates will be available from Tobs Kenya Conference Services whose desk is situated in the lobby near the Security Desk. Tobs is also responsible for Airport transfers to hotels and hotel reservations and can also be contacted for bookings of tours and safaris. Tobs can be contacted at: P.O. Acharya (ext. 2438/2439) can be found at the lower concourse, next to the Kenya Commercial Bank, whereas Bunson (ext. 4980/4985) is located at the upper concourse adjacent to the staff lounge. First aid Emergency first aid will be available throughout the duration of the session. The services of a doctor can be obtained if required. A nurse will be on duty during meeting hours, and can be contacted in Block F, room 117, ext. 2267 or 2268. An ambulance is available 24 hours a day. Business Center Xerox Kenya has been contracted by the UN to provide services at cost to delegates at the Business Center, located at the upper concourse. Services available include: photocopying, word-processing, telephone and fax, mobile phones, rental of office and meeting room equipment, incl. projectors, PC’s, copiers, fax machines etc. For more information please contact Mr. M. Postal services The post office with telegram, telex, fax and international telephone facilities, will be opened from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for Saturday and Sunday. During office hours, public phones are available inside the Post Office for which cash payments may be made at the counter. Pay phones, for use with phone-cards, which may be purchased from the Post Office, are available on a 24-hour basis outside the Post Office. Telephone calls Delegates are kindly requested to refrain from using telephones at the Registration Desk which are for the use of the secretariat staff only. Calls to the city can be made from the telephones near the post office out from the business center. Banking services Branches of the Kenya Commercial Bank and Citi Bank will be open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day for the duration of the session. Catering facilities at UN complex in February 2001 There are three regular caterers on the UN Complex contracted to provide food and beverages for breakfast, lunch as well as snacks during coffee breaks for staff and visiting delegates participating in conferences. These caterers can also organize food and drinks for private functions, dinners and receptions.

General Information: Kenya is located on the eastern coast of Africa, right on the equator. It is a land of striking landscapes, ranging from snow-capped Mount Kenya to rich farmlands, barren deserts and tropical beaches. It borders Somalia, Ethiopia and Sudan in the north, Uganda in the west, Tanzania in the south, and the Indian Ocean in the east. Kenya's capital city is Nairobi. Other major towns are Mombasa, the main port on the Indian Ocean and Kisumu on Lake Victoria. The eight provinces of Kenya range in geographical size from the small Nairobi Province to the much larger eastern and Rift Valley provinces. Kenya's national parks are wildlife and botanical sanctuaries set aside to conserve their unique species and for educational and recreational enjoyment by Kenyans and tourists. Time Zone: Kenya is GMT+ 0300 hours. Health: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for travelers over one year of age coming from infested areas. It is advisable that all visitors are vaccinated 10 days prior to departure. Malaria risk exists throughout the year in the whole country, though there is little risk in Nairobi and highlands. Electricity: 240 Volts. Official Language: The official languages of the Republic of Kenya are English and Kiswahili. Currency: The official currency of the Republic of Kenya is the Kenyan Shillings (Ksh). The current exchange rate vis-ŕ-vis the US dollar stands at approximately Ksh. 75 for one US dollar.
