Introducing the Joint Conference of Parties

for the Abidjan and Nairobi Convention

Cape Town, South Africa

5th - 8th November, 2007

Requirements of the Joint COP

Apart from the preparation of the working documents, which the Joint Secretariat is coordinating, there are logistical arrangements which South Africa has been asked, via a Country Host Agreement, to prepare. These include arranging of the venue, which will be in Cape Town, organising security and hiring support staff to assist the Joint Secretariat during the COPs.

Missions to selected countries are being conducted to discuss and promote the COP process, encourage participation and increased commitment from Contracting Parties, and to present the draft Protocol on Land Based Activities. Where possible, Ministers of Environment or similar are being met, as well as the Conventions’ focal points and heads of institutions with which the Joint Secretariat has partnerships. These visits are being conducted by the Director of ROA, the Director of DEPI and the Interim Regional Coordinators of both Conventions. In addition, two consultants have been contracted to assist in this process.

High-level participation by Senior Government Officials at the Joint COPs will be a demonstration of an increase in high-level political commitment by Contracting Parties to the achievement of the outputs and impacts described above. With the wide array of ongoing projects and initiatives in the region that are focusing on marine and coastal environment, We wish to reassure governments, of UNEP’s commitment to bringing together stakeholders to support a coordinated and long-term approach for the protection, management and development of the coastal and marine environment in sub-Saharan Africa over the coming years.

With this in mind, the Joint Secretariat of the Abidjan and Nairobi Conventions would like to invite the Contracting Parties to participate in the Joint Meeting of the Heads of Delegation, which will be held on 14th September 2007
