Introducing
the Joint Conference of Parties
for the Abidjan and Nairobi Convention
Cape Town, South Africa
5th - 8th November, 2007
|
Themes for the Joint COP
The theme of the Joint COPs is
‘Building on Success’, focusing on
the progress and successes achieved by governments,
key partners and stakeholders towards the implementation
of the objectives of the two Conventions. The
COPs offer participants an opportunity to further
the ongoing process of increased pan-African integration
and cooperation by facilitating sharing of experiences
and ideas.
The Joint COPs will focus on
ecosystems-based management approaches, especially
in the context of the connection between land
and sea. Draft protocols concerning land-based
activities and sources of pollution (the LBA Protocols)
will be presented to the Heads of Delegation meetings,
and the importance of involving “up-stream”
countries in the Conventions will be examined.
Other key thematic areas to be discussed during
the Conferences include: the Abidjan Convention’s
coordination structures; oil and gas exploration
and exploitation; strategic environmental assessments;
implementation of article 76 of the Law of the
Sea; climate change adaptations and mitigation;
sustainable financing; and enhanced visibility
for the Conventions.
