Conference on “Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Mitigation in the WIO region:
Solutions to the Crisis”

The Nairobi Convention for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Eastern and Southern African region, UNEP; the Government of Mauritius; the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association; and the Mauritius Oceanographic Institute,are organizing a Regional Conference on “Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Mitigation in the Western Indian Ocean region: Solutions to the Crisis” that will held be from 21 to 23 March 2011 at the Grand Baie, Mauritius.
The conference has brought together policy makers, permanent secretaries, senior government officials from the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region; representatives of regional bodies, business community, scientists and members of key national and international NGOs in the region.
The discussion will focus on, among others, solutions on impacts of climate change and experiences gained in implementation of adaptation and mitigation strategies. Thereafter a common stand in priorities for actions in relation to research, adaptation and mitigation strategies will be developed.
The main objectives of the conference are:
- Share knowledge and experiences in the implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, programmes and projects;
- Support and facilitate Western Indian Ocean (WIO) countries in their quest to forge a common vision on how to deal with impacts of climate change; and
- Develop a common stand in priorities for actions in relation to research, adaptation and mitigation strategies on solutions for the WIO region.
