Country Profile


Tanzania lies in the Eastern Africa region and borders the Indian Ocean between Kenya and Mozambique. Shortly after achieving independence from Britain in the early 1960s, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. It has a coastline of 1,424 km.

Total Population : 39,384,223 (July 2007 est.)

The maritime claims: Territorial Sea: 12 nm, Exclusive Economic Zone: 200 nm

Denmark donates for marine conservation

January 23 2008

The Danish government through the WWF-Denmark office has provided resources to start up a new project at Mnazi Bay, which is one of the EAME priority sites in Tanzania.

The project, "Community Development and Sustainable Management of Marine Resources in the Mnazi Bay and Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park (MBREMP), Tanzania" will take a period of four years. The executing Agency will be the WWF-Tanzania Programme Office. The overall objective of the project is to improve the socio-economic well-being of communities living in MBREMP through participatory management, sustainable utilization and protection of their marine and coastal resources.

The expected outputs of the projects will be

  1. Participatory Village Environmental Management Plans (VEMPs) and MBREMP GMP developed and consolidated,
  2. Awareness, communication and education on sustainable marine resource management improved,
  3. Needs for Improvement of Community Livelihoods identified and implemented in a gender perspective,
  4. the capacity of men and women to access social infrastructure and service is built at village level.
  5. Capacity of local Civil Society Organizations, CBOs and NGOs dealing with sustainable marine resource use and livelihoods developed and strengthened.

The primary target group is marine and coastal resource users, in particular fishers, both men and women, who reside in the 11 villages within MBREMP area in Mtwara Rural District, Tanzania. The secondary target group is local NGOs that will be facilitated to carry out specific field activities and will receive the necessary and required capacity building and support from the project in order to further develop their capacity to interact and cooperate with the villagers and the Marine Park administration.

National Focal Point
