Polar Books is an International Polar Year (IPY) project featuring an online collection of books about the Arctic and Antarctica that reflect IPY themes and are internationally endorsed by IPY.
The Polar Resource Library is a contribution from UNEP to the legacy of International Polar Year. It holds education and outreach materials from the books as well as materials developed through the IPY Education and Outreach Committee and the International Programme Office. Materials in this library include full books, book excerpts, posters, photos, artwork, teachers' guides and activity sheets. Contents of this virtual library are freely availalbe for education and outreach purposes. Please credit the owners of the materials and this site. We would love to hear from you about how you are using these materials.
Quality books slated for publication up until March 2011 (two years after IPY) will continue to be added to the Polar Books collection. Books must fit well within IPY themes, include information about IPY, and have a broad target audience. Children's books and teachers' resources are welcome. Books will not be excluded based on considerations of competitiveness or on limiting duplication of coverage of subjects or types of books. Project members cooperate on IPY promotion activities and provide resources from their books for free use in IPY education and outreach.
More information on IPY themes and projects is available on the IPY website at www.ipy.org. Polar Books is IPY Project Number 440.
Polar Books is led by UNEP/GRID-Arendal and coordinated through the IPY International Programme Office. The project is managed by Joan Eamer (Global Outlook for Ice and Snow), Fredrik Granath (Vanishing Arctic) and Lucia Sala Simion (Antarctique, Coeur Blanc de la Terre).
Polar Books invites new authors to have their books considered for inclusion by submitting an application to polarbooks@grida.no at UNEP/GRID-Arendal. A separate IPY Expression of Intent is not necessary.
