Vanishing World – The Endangered Arctic

An unprecedented visual record of life in the Arctic. Both a celebration of the region and its wildlife and a cautionary tale of global warming. Photographs by Mireille de la Lez; text by Fredrik Granath, November 2007.

Vanishing World

Five years in the making – “Vanishing World” is an unprecedented visual record of the high Arctic, rendering a living image of its nature, wildlife and threatened environment. It is a celebration of life in the harshest and most unforgiving world imaginable and yet the most fragile and beautiful. The frozen roof of the Arctic Ocean.

"Vanishing World" tells an important story about a world of ice and extreme conditions. A frozen world where global warming leads to fast and dramatic changes. Dr. Neil Hamilton of the WWF writes in his foreword "There are moments in the history of planet earth that are more important than others. Climate change caused by human action is the most serious challenge ever faced by humanity and nature, and it is happening now. Denial is no longer an option.

"In a setting of rugged mountains and mighty glaciers, you will follow the polar bear mother as she takes her newborns out on the ice for their first hunt, you will experience the polar night - a season when the moon, the stars and the colorful auroras are the only sources of light. You will visit the endless pack-ice of the Arctic ocean and witness its impressive wildlife struggling for survival in the most extreme environment on earth. You are heading for a place where man steps back and nature takes over.

Granath and de la LezPhotographer Mireille de la Lez and producer Fredrik Granath have years of experience from intensive field work in the High Arctic and have assembled a unique expertise of working under the most extreme conditions. Isolated, all alone on the Arctic sea ice and tundra, often hundreds of miles from the nearest settlement, their expeditions usually last several months. They believe living with the wildlife and getting to know them and their behaviors is a requirement for unique images. ”Vanishing World” is their first book. They also produce exhibitions, film and articles for magazines around the world, including National Geographic and GEO.
