UNEP/ Vanity Fair Advertising Campaign

Vanity Fair magazine in Germany and UNEP have collaborated on a unique project in order to raise awareness and catalyze action on the challenge of biodiversity loss.

We decided to see how some of the world's advertising experts might bring their skills to bear on issues as seemingly diverse and as complex as biodiversity and climate change, biodiversity and alien invasive species up to more intelligent use of nature-based resources, protected areas and agriculture.

The project was carried out in support of the 9th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity taking place in Bonn from 19 to 30 May.

The pro bono results are a provocative, witty and thought-provoking series of images and ideas generated by the agencies St Elmo's, the McCann Group in Berlin and Hamburg and Feuer.

We hope their work will catalyze governments, business, civil society and individuals to even greater heights towards reversing the rate of loss of biodiversity by 2010.

UNEP would like to thank the agencies and Vanity Fair for their support. We hope and believe it will galvanize other publishers and advertising professionals to focus their skills onto other sustainability challenges from waste management and chemicals to how the world can more creatively manage the globe's natural and nature-based assets on a planet of 6.7 billion people.

The concept
An Utopian notion - what if all the affected parties of biological diversity could discuss it together?
Therefore, a conference of animals with a sense of responsibility is depicted. Just the same is expected of humans.

The idea „Words“

„From May 28 - May 30 the UNEP Convention on Biological Diversity takes place in Bonn. Initially, nobody really understood the topics under discussion. Just 2 weeks later we are not only discussing the topics with friends, we have also successfully communicated the key messages of each topic, in a single, seamless campaign, using only one powerful visual element for each motif, which is itself a graphically-represented key word. It is a pity, that the discussions at the convention will not flow as easily as this campaign did.“

The idea „Coulisse“

„To mark the occasion of the UNEP Convention on Biological Diversity in Bonn, we considered what would happen to nature if changes are not made in the future.
How would it be, if the variety of species and crops will no longer exist in the future.
The idea: We exhibit crops and animals like theatre scenes. With the Headline: “No illusions anymore” and make clear that nature can´t be compensated by theatre scenes. We prove this with powerful supporting facts. We are looking forward to a successful conference in Bonn.“
