A pertinent idea conveyed by Confucianism, suggests that any reform should be preceded by a change of the mindset, most probably through education, in order to be sustainable. On June 5th, 2007, the ANDIUSANA partnership of the British Council Connecting Classrooms project in Mauritius celebrated the World Environment Day, by honouring its pledge made in the context of the UNEP Billion Trees campaign, with the objective of creating awareness among young people about global warming issues. The event gathered up more than a hundred enthusiastic students. “We feel that we have successfully met our goals, as seen from the concern shown by the students. Below are a few quotes gathered from the participants in the project”says the school Rector Melinda Mounsmie Oosman: The students noted: “Its my pleasure to inform you that I was extremely happy by the word that the British Council representative had said, and I want to collaborate with them... on June 6th, 2007 after noting that they have planted some trees in our school yard, I went home to have some plants in my yard, to protect us from the greenhouse effect...”Dyall Indoolee. “Our planet is in our hands... protect it”. Hoorvashi Sookee: “... that made us think there are a lot of problems on earth... the more we plant the more safe the earth will be.”. Hashnee Chulan: “... I realised that there are many weather problems in the outer world...”. Lovena Soobaul: “... After a small speech of a man from British Council, I realised that there are many problems of weather in the whole world...”.
Phillip Goodwin the British Council Regional Director for East, West Africa, is confident that this project will help young people develop as active citizens who will make a positive contribution to their communities and to building a safer world. |
