 About TUNZA Global Youth Retreat

The fourth TUNZA Global Youth Retreat (GYR) was held in Nairobi from 16-18 February 2005 to coincide with the UNEP Governing Council's (GC) 23rd session and the Global Civil Society Forum (GCSF), thus providing young people with an opportunity to review policy issues and share with Environment Ministers and civil society leaders their visions and recommendations.

The UNEP Global Youth Retreat is a biennial event. It provides a forum for youth representatives to examine how UNEP is working with young people both globally and regionally. The event brought together 44 participants and leaders of environmental youth organizations from 34 countries.

During the Retreat, members of the TUNZA Youth Advisory Council were elected. UNEP gives the 12 council members (2 per region) the responsibility of representing youth in UNEP related inter-governmental and international environmental negotiations. The Advisors also advise UNEP and its regional offices on better ways of incorporating youth in UNEP's activities.

The major topics discussed at the Retreat were:

- the role of youth in acheiving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),
- review of the implementation of the TUNZA Committments adopted at the last TUNZA   International Youth Conference in Dubna (August 2003), and
the environmental impact of the tsunami disaster.
