Earth Hour

UNEP is proud to support Earth Hour in 2009.

A World Wildlife Fund (WWF) initiative, Earth Hour has the goal of motivating one billion people in more than 1,000 cities around the world to switch off their lights for one hour from 8.30-9.30pm on Saturday 28 March 2009 (your local time).

Earth Hour is a symbolic, global event which aims to send a powerful message that it is possible for everyone to take action on climate change.

United Nations support

The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, has agreed to UN-wide participation in Earth Hour. Along with many other famous landmarks around the world, the UN Headquarters in New York will be part of the global effort on 28 March 2009.Earth

For the first time, Nairobi will be among the cities in the world hosting Earth Hour. The UN Office in Nairobi, which includes UNEP headquarters, will help lead the way for Africa.

Complementing such UN initiatives as the UNite to Combat Climate Change campaign, Earth Hour is a way for the citizens of the world to send a clear message to their national leaders that they want action on climate change.

What you can do

1: Take part in Earth Hour by turning off the lights and non-essential electrical appliances at your home between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March 2009 – at your local time wherever you live in the world.

2: Be inspired by Earth Hour and take steps to reduce your climate footprint all year round. Check out “Kick the habit: A UN Guide to Climate Neutrality” for information and advice.
3: Sign up for Earth Hour, switch off, spread the word and take action by visiting www.earthhour.org.
