Tree Planting in Lombardia and Vigodarzere, Italy

Lombardy Region, Italy
The Ente Regionale per i Servizi all'Agricoltura e alle Foreste (Regional Administration for Agriculture and Forestry) of the Lombardia Region of Italy has recently joined the Billion Tree Campaign with a pledge of 7,000 trees.

Lombardia lies between the Alps and the River Po, and although the region home to scenic beauty, less than one percent of the land is forested.  One sixth of Italy's population lives in Lombardia, and it is the wealthiest and most industrialized region.  Partly because of high population density, deforestation and development have decreased forest area in the region.

ERSAF is eager to contribute to afforestation efforts in the region. The 7,000 trees will be planted on a 55-hectare area where a total of 100,000 trees will be planted over a longer period of time.

A reflection of the human face of the Billion Tree Campaign, Vigodarzere city in Italy held a tree planting in honour of babies born in 2006.

April 14 marked the Tree Celebration for Newborn Babies in Vigodarzere, where parents and community members planted 131 trees for new babies born in 2006. On the right is, Roberta Dall'Osto from Vigodarzere City Hall at Padova Province celebrates tree planting with a family. As a result of this celebration, children in Italy will have a tree that shares their age as they grow older.
