 5 June, 2008 - The Leela Mumbai celebrated the World Environment Day and continued its sustained efforts for its green initiatives, yesterday. The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts, supports the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Billion Tree Campaign, a global initiative to encourage tree planting. The existing four Leela hotels and resorts have planted a total of 35, 56,633 trees, and intends to plant another 78,447 trees for the Leela Palace Udaipur, which is scheduled to open in January 2009.
Capt C P Krishnan Nair, Chairman, The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts has been awarded many accolades, including the Global 500 Roll of Honour Award by UNEP, which is the highest award given to supporters of the environment movement. “Environmental protection is no longer about being green, reusing towels and recycling paper. Today, the main focus is on corporate responsibility by practicing environment protection and sustainability,” says Capt Nair
The hotel had come up with a special programme to celebrate World Environment Day. The day started with a four km environment walkathon, in which employees of the hotel and children invited from nearby orphanages participated. Colourful floats decorated to the theme ‘Let’s Save the World We Live In’ accompanied the participants as they marched and planted saplings en route to create awareness.
