Our goal is to plant one million trees in the area of Flanders, located in the northern part of Belgium. This densely populated and industrialised region has one of the lowest forest percentages of Europe, and our aim is to help remediate this poor record.
Under the UNEP-slogan ‘Planten voor de Planeet’ (Plant for the Planet) we will launch a major education and sensibilization campaign. People will be informed about the positive impacts that trees and forests have on society, climate and health. In this way, we will try to actively involve as many people as possible.
As our region is densely populated, every square metre of land is under high demand. The biggest challenge will be to find appropriate land and getting the necessary permits to plant. With the help of landowners, corporations and local governments, we firmly believe we can successfully fulfil this challenge, and afforest about 500 hectares, which is the equivalent of about one million new trees.
Also, we realize that our actions in the north - continue to - have a major impact on forests in the southern hemisphere. Therefore we want to take our responsibility and support afforestation efforts in these countries as well. We will do this by active fundraising in Flanders, and by funding and cooperating with local organizations to carry out these afforestation activities.
This campaign is actively supported by the Flemish Minister of Environment, Mrs. Hilde Crevits. The daily management and communication is handled by the Organisation for Forests in Flanders.
