Billion Tree Campaign One-Year Anniversary Celebration with Ipe planting
Brasilia (07 November, 2007) – The non-governmental organization Action of Citizenship Against Hunger, Poverty and For Life will promote tomorrow (8) the one-year anniversary celebration for the Billion Tree Campaign. The event is part of the all-day agenda by the NGO.
The scheduled activities include the launching of Solidarity Christmas 2007 and the planting of an ipe (tabebuia tree) seedling, donated by the University of Brasília. It will be the 918,998th tree planted in the Brazilian Federal District in the framework of the Billion Tree Campaign. The goal is to plant one million trees in the region.
In the afternoon, students from the 304 Norte Primary School, together with family and friends, will plant a cagaita tree(Eugenia dysenterica). The planting will be lead by Eric Fisher, campaign coordinator in Brasilia. Students from diverse public schools and NGO members will plant a baruzeiro tree (Dipteryx alata) that same afternoon, the tree number 919,000 in the Federal District – a number which gets closer to the 1 million trees goal for the region.
The baruzeiro tree will be the 90,000,000th native seedling planted in Brazil for the Billion Tree Campaign. The State of Parana takes the lead on the campaign, with 8 million seedlings planted through a reforestation program by the state government with cooperation of local farmers. Brazil amounts 100 million pledges in the Billion Tree Campaign.
Mexico is the leading tree-planter in the Campaign, pledging a 250 million tree goal. The country mobilized its army and provided financial resources for environment services, as stated by the Mexican president.
