Trees for the Future Plants 9 Million Trees Worldwide

Trees for the Future, a charitable organization based in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA, has so far planted more than 9 million trees worldwide in 2007. Since they formed the organization 19 years ago, TREES has assisted in the planting of more than 60 million trees in the world's developing communities.

"This is truly a people-to-people program at the grassroots level" says Dave Deppner, Executive Director of TREES. "The credit for all this really belongs to the people planting the trees on their land. That's about 300,000 families in about 12,000 developing villages of Asia, Africa, and the Americas."

The planting of these trees is part of a long-term commitment by TREES to the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign of the United Nations Environment Programme. This contribution by TREES represents about 60% of the total commitment by US individuals and organizations and about 7% of all trees planted so far this year for the Billion Tree Campaign.

The trees planted by this organization since its inception annually remove about 1,500,000 Tons of Carbon Dioxide from the global atmosphere, turning it into food, shelter and other important needs for the people of these communities.

"At the same time" Deppner points out, "this is not tree planting for the sake of planting trees. Each project we assist is designed to bring important and environmentally sustainable benefits to the participating community. These trees bring important livelihood opportunities, as well as improve the quality of life for these families. If they didn't, this Program would never have been this successful.”

The Program has been made possible through contributions from socially and environmentally concerned individuals and by private businesses and foundations.
