Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) – Forestry
Forestry contributes significantly to the achievement of FAO's mission to "help build a food-secure world for present and future generations," and to "assist Member Nations in: reducing food insecurity and rural poverty; ensuring an enabling policy and regulatory framework for food and agriculture, fisheries and forestry; securing sustainable increases in the supply and availability of food; conserving and enhancing the natural resource base; and generating knowledge of food and agriculture, fisheries and forestry".

  Forest Stewardship Council
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international not-for-profit membership-based organization that brings people together to find solutions to the problems created by bad forestry practices and to reward good forest management.
 

Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005 (FRA 2005)
Since 1946, FAO regularly monitors the world's forests through Global Forest Resources Assessments. The mandate to carry out these assessments stems both from the basic statutes of FAO and the Committee on Forestry (COFO).

  Horizon Solutions site
The purpose of the site is to provide a forum for the presentation of solutions to vital concerns in the areas of health, population, development and the environment. By presenting the case studies on the Internet, the Solutions Site provides the means to encourage replication of the initiatives presented, and to foster the development of new ones.

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) is an international work program designed to meet the needs of decision makers and the public for scientific information concerning the consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being and options for responding to those changes.

  Pacific Southwest Research Station
The Pacific Southwest Research Station represents the research and development branch of the USDA Forest Service in the states of California and Hawaii and the U.S. affiliated Pacific Islands. They develop and deliver science-based information, technologies, understanding and applications to help people make well-informed decisions about natural resource management, conservation and environmental protection.

The PEFC is committed to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third party forest certification.
 

United Nations Forum on Forests
An intergovernmental policy forum to promote "...the management, conservation and and sustainable development of all types of forests and strengthen longterm political commitment to this end..."

 

UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre
The UNEP-WCMC evaluates and highlights the many values of biodiversity and puts authoritative biodiversity knowledge at the centre of decision-making.

 

World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)
ICRAF aims to achieve an 'agroforestry transformation' in the developing world resulting in a massive increase in the use of working trees on working landscapes by smallholder rural households that helps ensure security in food, nutrition, income, health, shelter and energy and a regenerated environment.

 

Worldwatch Institute
The Worldwatch Institute is an independent research organization that works for an environmentally sustainable and socially just society, in which the needs of all people are met without threatening the health of the natural environment or the well-being of future generations.

As environmental issues have become more complex and more international, the new generation of environmental leaders will increasingly need professional training in environmental science, management, and policy.
