City of Greater Sudbury planted 60,000 trees this year as part of the United Nations Billion Tree Campaign

Through its regreening program, the City of Greater Sudbury planted 60,000 trees this year as part of the United Nations Billion Tree Campaign. This brings the city's two-year contribution to more than 223,000 trees.

The trees have helped the campaign reach its goal of planting seven billion trees worldwide -- one for every person on the planet. "Greater Sudbury's regreening efforts are truly a source of pride for this community," Mayor John Rodriguez said in a release. "Through the efforts of many dedicated community members, we have planted more than one tree for every resident of our city."

The seven-billion tree milestone was reached in September with news that the Government of China had planted 2.6 billion trees as part of the campaign, bringing the total to 7.3 billion trees planted in 167 countries. The campaign was launched in 2006.
