Trees for Travel and the population of Mt Malindang plant trees

In 2008 Trees for Travel foundation started financing the reforestation of 50 hectares on Mount Malindang in the Philippines using funds from donations and by the beginning of 2009, 100,000 trees had already planted in the area.

The Mount Malindang area has faced severe logging in the past, which has had a real negative impact on both the (unique) biodiversity of the area and soil protection, causing erosion problems down slope.

The project provides a source of livelihood and income for the local population: who are responsible for setting up the tree nurseries, the planting of trees and forest management. The community also gets support from the local government and forestry institutes. In return for their work and assistance in forest protection, they also get a yearly disbursement of funds.

20% of the area planted will be communal forest, to be used by the local population as they like, as long as they follow the FSC principles. Majority of the people have decided to plant rubber trees in their 20%, for its economic value.

The other 80% local trees species are planted resembling the original species composition of the area. The area has a unique biodiversity, with still some unidentified species. This area is also home to the endangered Philippine Tarsier. Expanding the forest will help protect these species and give them a larger habitat.

The local population comprises very enthusiastic people, and if it were up to them they would replant another 100 hectares every year. Trees for Travel hopes that it will be able to find enough funds in time to help the community it its eagerness to plant.
