A major BirdLife International study led by the Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds (RSPB) has documented the potential impact of European
transport infrastructure development in countries that are preparing to join
the EU. The study shows that a very high percentage of Important Bird Areas
(IBAs), which are high priority biodiversity areas, are located close to new
or upgraded roads, railways and waterways identified in the Transport
Infrastructure Needs Assessment (TINA) report of 1999.

An Assessment of the Potential Impact of the TINA Network on Important Bird
Areas (IBAs) in EU Accession Countries (160 pages) can be obtained free of
cost from Mr Zoltan Waliczky, EU Accession Officer, The RSPB, The Lodge,
Sandy, Bedfordshire SG19 2DL, UK. Tel: +44 (0) 1767 680551, fax: +44 (0)
