Whether they are economists or philosophers, musicians or artists, religious or civic figures operating on the global, national or local stage, certain people and organizations are truly distinguished when it comes to making a real difference in protecting our planet. UNEP's Champions of the Earth Awards honours these best and brightest as they strive to take action for our planet through their visionary thinking, unwavering dedication and committed action towards the sustainable use of the planet’s resources for global green growth.

Beginning in 2010, the Champions of the Earth Awards will now come with a monetary prize of USD40,000 for each of the four category winners. In addition to the especially commissioned trophy done by a selected international artist, the cash prize serves as an incentive and resource for growing and replicating the laureates’ work and their impact on the communities they serve.
