Mercury Waste Management


The management of mercury and mercury-containing waste is the last step in the product life-cycle.

The elimination of mercury in products and processes may be the most efficient way to avoid the presence of any form of mercury in waste.

While mercury is being phased down from products and processes, there is still a need to manage mercury from this end of the product life-cycle.

Partnership Priority Actions

  • Identify and disseminate environmentally sound collection, transportation, treatment and disposal techniques/practices to reduce mercury releases from waste by following a lifecycle management approach, .
  • Assess environmental impacts of current waste management practices and processes, including providing support to countries to assess their national situation and needs.
  • Promote public awareness of the hazards regarding mercury waste and its management and support community engagement in the activities of the Waste Management Partnership.
