The third session of the Committee took place at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi from 31 October to 4 November 2011. UNEP organized a series of technical briefings to present information that may be relevant for the intergovernmental negotiating committee on mercury. These briefings build on the presentations made at previous technical briefings and information requests of the intergovernmental negotiating committee.

Immediately following the technical briefing, the Government of Switzerland hosted a side event 'Addressing the Challenges of Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining: Experiences of the Swiss Development Cooperation'.  It took place in the UN complex on Sunday October 30 from 13.00-14.00.
