At the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention in May 2009, nine new POPs were listed into the annexes A, B or C of the Convention (decisions SC-4/10 to SC-4/18). By its decision SC-4/31 on the global monitoring plan (GMP) for effectiveness evaluation, the Conference requested, among others, updating the guidance document for the GMP, which was developed to provide Parties with the necessary tools for the monitoring of the initial twelve POPs.
In response to this request, UNEP Chemicals Branch is executing the project 'Establishing the tools and methods to include the nine new POPs into the Global Monitoring Plan', funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Through this project, the Chemicals Branch together with partners is assisting the Stockholm Convention Secretariat and the Parties to the Stockholm Convention in developing or updating guidance documents for the sampling and analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and polybrominated flame retardants (PBDE, HxBB, HBCD).
