Pesticide-related activities at UNEP Chemicals

Pesticides are used because of their toxic properties towards target species. However, they can cause harm to non-target species as well. For this reason it is extremely important to limit the use of these substances to situations where they are absolutely needed and then used in ways that limit damage to human health and the environment to a minimum.

The Branch collaborates closely with other Intergovernmental Organizations and Multilateral Environmental Agreement (MEA) Secretariats in promoting sound management of pesticides, which includes integrated pest management (IPM) and integrated vector management (IVM), which are approaches building on several control options and using pesticides as a last resort. IPM and IVM as well as a combination thereof are hence approaches also recommended in the reduction / elimination of persistent organic pollutant (POP) pesticides covered under the Stockholm Convention.

The UNEP/DTIE Chemicals Branch actively promotes sound management of chemicals within the framework of Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM). Pesticides is probably the group of substances for which the international community has advanced the most in this area. With SAICM work is now accelerated and cooperation with other agencies intensified. Please follow the links below to access information on our pesticide-related activities.
