Major Groups and Stakeholders Participation in the United Nations Environment Assembly 2014

Open-Ended CPR
March 24 - 28, 2014, in Nairobi

June 23 - 27, 2014, in Nairobi

The United Nations Environment Assembly of the UNEP (UNEA) is the main governing body of UNEP.

Forty years later, at the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the international community decided to strengthen and upgrade UNEP including through the establishment of universal membership in the Governing Council. As a follow up to this decision, the Governing Council held its first session with universal membership in February 2013, where countries agreed to rename the Governing Council as the “United Nations Environment Assembly of the UNEP” (UNEA). Subsequently, the General Assembly adopted a resolution formally changing the designation to UNEA (67/251).

According to the decision adopted at the first session of the Governing Council with universal membership (27th session), UNEA will meet biennially in Nairobi starting in 2014. UNEA is mandated to ensure the active participation of all relevant stakeholders in the governance of UNEP and to promote a strong science-policy interface.

How will women benefit from UNEA?

In response UNEP developed in collaborations with all relevant stakeholders new modalities for stakeholder engagement in UNEP. The draft UNEP stakeholder engagement policy will be presented at the 1st session of the UNEA of UNEP.

June 21 - 22, 2014, in Nairobi

Prior to the UNEA the 15th Global Major Groups and Stakeholder Forum (GMGSF) will take place on 21-22 June 2014, just before the United Nations Environment Assembly of UNEP (UNEA) meets.

The GMGSF aims at facilitating the preparations of Major Groups and Stakeholders accredited to UNEP towards the First United Nations Environmental Assembly, allowing them to discuss the main UNEA themes and to prepare their input to UNEA. The Forum is self-organized by Major Groups and Stakeholder through the Major Groups Facilitating Committee.

During the Forum, UNEP staff and experts from civil society will give updates and background information on main UNEA themes and on opportunities for Major Groups and Stakeholder to participate and intervene in UNEA session. A highlight of the event will be an open dialogue with Mr. Achim Steiner, the Executive Director of UNEP, during which the GMGSF participants will have the opportunity to interact with Mr. Steiner on any topic they wish to raise.
It is also hoped that there will be a productive discussion with respect to UNEP’s new Stakeholder Engagement Policy that will hopefully be approved by UNEA.
