In 2011, the UNEP Regional Consultative Meetings (RCMs) with Major Groups and Stakeholders of civil society took place between September and December.

In 2011, the Regional Consultative Meetings focussed on the following key topics:
  • Rio+20 desired outcomes and the role of civil society in shaping the agenda of the Conference and influencing the Conference outcomes
  • Green economy and poverty eradication
  • Institutional framework for sustainable development (IFSD): rethinking the current sustainable development paradigm, International Environmental Governance (IEG)
  • Emerging issues likely to affect the development agenda in the next 20 to 30 years and which need to be captured at the Conference: the outcomes of the GEO-5 and UNEP foresight processes
  • Eye on Earth Summit

The consultations also serve as capacity building and networking exercises for Major Groups and stakeholders in the regions, and constitute platforms for Regional Offices to engage with Major Groups and stakeholders on an annual basis.
