UNEP Regional consultations with Major Groups and stakeholders (RCMs) 2011

UNEP Regional consultations with Major Groups and stakeholders (RCMs) 2011

The annual UNEP Regional Consultation with Major Groups and Stakeholders (RCMs) were held between September and December 2011.

These Consultations were held in preparation for UNEP’s 12th Special Session of the Governing Council / Global Ministerial Environment Forum to be held on 20-22 February 2012.

They provided an opportunity for major groups and stakeholders to prepare their inputs into the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (18-19 February 2012) and into 12th Special Session of the Governing Council / Global Ministerial Environment Forum, on the main themes of the GC/GMEF.

The Consultations focused on the following key themes:

  • Rio+20 desired outcomes and role of civil society in shaping the agenda of the Conference and influencing the Conference outcomes
  • Green economy (and poverty eradication) - depending on the region, focus on issues was different
  • Institutional framework for sustainable development: rethinking the current sustainable development paradigm, International Environmental Governance (IEG)
  • Emerging issues - issues likely to affect the development agenda in the next 20 to 30 years and need to be captured at the Conference: the outcomes of the GEO 5 and UNEP foresight processes
  • Short introduction to the Eye on the Earth Summit
  • Relevant regional issues.

The Consultations also serve as capacity building and networking exercises for Major Groups and Stakeholders in the regions, and constitute platforms for Regional Offices to engage with major groups and stakeholders on an annual basis.
