…The path towards UNEA 2 …

Multi Stakeholder Dialogues in preparation of UNEA 2

In view of the upcoming UNEA-2 ( 23-27 May 2016, Nairobi, Kenya), several multi-stakeholder dialogues are being held and organised with some of UNEP's lead partners. The wide participation of all stakeholders in UNEA-2 is an utmost priority for UNEP and the success of UNEA-2.

1. Preparing stakeholders for UNEA-2 meeting. (Wednesday, 20 April 2016, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES)

This New York meeting is part of series of global webinars and events (including parallel sessions in London and Geneva) organised by Stakeholder Forum, UNEP, as well as CIVICUS, aimed at supporting stakeholder input in UNEA2.

Open-ended Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to UNEP

The second Open-ended  Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (OECPR 2)  will take place from February 15 - 19 in Nairobi, in preparation for the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-2), which will take place 21-27 May 2016.  The meeting will be open to all international non-governmental organisations that are formally accredited to UNEP.

Delivering on the Environmental Dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

The second session of the United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA-2) will take place at the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya under the overarching theme, “Delivering on the Environmental Dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” The Assembly which represents the world’s highest-level of decision-making body on the environment will culminate in resolutions and a global call to action to address the critical environmental challenges facing the world today.

UNEA-2 which will be held from 23 to 27 May 2016 will reflect the latest global, regional and national development related to the environment. It will also provide the first global platform for reviewing progress on SDGs, particularly their environmental dimensions. UNEA-2 High Level Segment taking place from 26 to 27 May 2016 will bring together Ministers from all UN Member States and will include multi-stakeholder dialogue involving heads of inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations including the private sector under the call of “Healthy Environment – Healthy People” . This thematic focus will allow all relevant actors to identify concrete tools available to take an integrated and universal approach to the implementation of the SDGs, including those related to critical areas such as air quality, healthy ecosystems, chemicals, wastes and others that may emerge in the preparatory process as well as do develop strategic, multi-stakeholder partnership to address ongoing and emerging environmental issues.

To increase multi-stakeholder participation in the UNEA-2, UNEP has developed a user friendly, interactive, moderated, online hub MyUNEA.org. The platform is targeting Citizens, Civil Society Organizations, Governments, IGOs including UN Agencies and more importantly Major Groups and Stakeholders with the aim at fostering public participation to thematic discussions and disseminating information on reports and documents prepared for UNEA. Moreover, it will invite inputs for High-level informal Symposia and other forms of Stakeholders engagements during UNEA meetings.

UNEA-2 will be preceded by the Science Policy Forum  (SP-Forum) on 19-20 May 2016, a platform which will bring together science and policy stakeholders to address challenges and new opportunities, with the aim of enhancing a collective understanding, strengthen the science policy dialogue and recommend concrete measures for collective action in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The SP Forum will be followed by the associated meeting to the UNEA: the 16th Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF) will be held on 21-22 May 2016 to facilitate the preparations of Major groups and stakeholders (MGS) for UNEA 2 as well as engage with CPR members and UNEP staff. This year’s International Day of Biodiversity celebrated on 22 May will be hosted by Kenya and a special programme is foreseen that day in Gigiri co-hosted by Convention on Biological Diversity and the Mexican Ministry of Environment.

In parallel to the UNEA-2 proceedings, a three day Sustainable Innovation Expo (24-26 May 2016) will bring  together CEOs of Leading companies, institutions, foundations, banks, insurance companies, investors and Major Groups all aspiring to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, twenty six Side Events will provide opportunities for inspiring dialogue on variety of themes. Finally the traditional Greenroom Side Events (23 – 27 May 2016 to be held in Conference room 11) primarily for and by Major Groups and Stakeholders will also provide opportunities for dialogue and exchange on a variety of themes.

For UNEP, It is of utmost importance to ensure the participation of leaders of Civil Society organizations, including from all major groups but in particular encouraging youth, women, farmers and indigenous peoples representatives to join us on this path alongside heads of United Nations sister organizations, programmes and treaty bodies. Only with their active involvement and participation can UNEA become the major platform for international environmental governance, as envisaged at the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD).

Major Groups and Stakeholders (MGS) were invited to contribute to the development of the Global Thematic Report on Healthy Planet and Healthy People through an E-discussion as well as during the multi-stakeholder and regional consultative meetings on the way to UNEA2.

Of particular interest to MGS will be the planned adoption of the draft Stakeholder Engagement Policy during UNEA 2. Here is the Proposal for Stakeholder Engagement Policy as presented to UNEA 2 for your information only.
