Civil Society Organization representatives, government officials and UNEP staff expressed their views on how Civil Society could play a greater, more active role in UNEP's work. Key points of discussions were UNEP's accreditation criteria for Civil Society Organizations as well as the need for a body to oversee the collaboration between UNEP and Civil Society and for greater flexibility in UNEP's funding of projects.

Views on a future strengthened and streamlined international environmental governance system were shared between UNEP staff, government officials and representatives of Civil Society Organizations. The discussions highlighted the important role of Civil Society in bringing about changes in the system that would be credible to all stakeholders and addressed the issue of what UNEP's role in the process would be.
