In 2009, high-level international deliberations will be complemented by a growing number of community, industry and private sector-led events aimed at promoting urgent decision-making and action to combat climate change.
It is now less than 12 months until nations must agree on a new climate treaty under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In December 2009, an estimated 189 governments are due to meet in Copenhagen, Denmark, to decide on a comprehensive, global climate regime to apply from 2012, when the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol will expire.
As a part of its support to multilateral environmental agreements, and in close cooperation with the UNFCCC secretariat, UNEP is working towards a successful outcome of these crucial negotiations.
