UNEP to Launch Major Climate Reports Ahead of COP17 in Durban
16/ 11/ 2011

UNEP to Launch Major Climate Reports Ahead of COP17 in DurbanNairobi, 22 November 2011 - This week, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will launch major reports on climate change in the run-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP17).

Details on the press launch of each report can be found below and under 'Further Resources'.

Can the World's Emissions Gap be Bridged by 2020?

23 November 2011
Launch Venue: Kohn Hall, The Royal Society, London, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG
Time: 11:30 am (local)

UNEP convened 55 scientists from 28 scientific groups across 15 countries to review the latest scientific studies of the 'gap' between commitments by nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and the actual emissions reductions required to keep global temperature rise under 2° Celsius. The report also tackles the question - How can the gap be bridged? The report is a follow up to a 2010 study that became a key and clear benchmark for the international climate negotiations in Cancun, last December.

UNEP Report Outlines Measures and Costs of Reducing Black Carbon and Non-CO2 Gases to Slow Climate Change

25 November 2011
Launch Venue: Main Conference Room, The Royal Society, London, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG
Time: 11:30 am (local)

This report outlines a package of 16 measures which could reduce global warming, avoid millions of premature deaths and reduce global crop yield losses by tackling black carbon, methane and ground-level ozone - substances known as short-term climate forcers. The report demonstrates that half of these measures can deliver net cost savings over their lifetime, for example, from reduced fuel consumption or the use of recovered gas.
