Media Arrangements for UNEP Governing Council and Global Ministerial Environment ForumNairobi, 18 February 2012 - Representatives from over 100 countries, including Heads of State, environment ministers, renowned scientists, business leaders and civil society groups will meet in Nairobi from 20-22 February 2012 for the 12th Special Session of the Governing Council / Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF).
The event will be the last global meeting of environment ministers before the landmark United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) to be held in June. UNEP will also hold several events during the three days to mark its 40th anniversary.

Media Accreditation
Journalists can collect pre-registered press passes or register on site at the media registration desk at the Visitor’s Pavilion, next to the main entrance to the UN compound. Due to security measures, a valid press card and national ID must be shown.
The Media registration desk will be open at the following times.
Saturday 18 February:  10am – 1pm / Monday 20 February: 8:00am – 1pm / Tuesday 21 February: 8:00am – 1pm
Transport
Transport for journalist to UNEP Governing Council press events will be provided.
A bus (marked Amicabre) will depart from Chester House, Nairobi, at the following times:
Monday 21 February: 07:30 am (for Opening Ceremony) and 11.15am (for press conference)
Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 February: 11.15am (for press conferences)

H.E. Mwai Kibaki, President of the Republic of Kenya, is expected to join the Executive Directors of UNEP and UN-HABITAT and the Director-General of UNON at the Opening Ceremony. Schoolchildren from Nairobi will give a musical performance to celebrate the 40th anniversary of UNEP. 

Opening Press Conference: Critical and Emerging Issues in the Global Environment

Time: 1:00 – 1:45pm, Monday 20 February
Venue: Press Centre, UNEP Headquarters, Gigiri
UNEP will launch two landmark studies detailing critical and emerging issues in the global environment. The Foresight Report - the results of a consultative process involving over 400 scientists - will rank 21 priority emerging issues for the 21st Century; all of which experts say require action in the next one to three years.  The emerging issues range from new challenges on food safety, to tackling inland water degradation in developing countries. 
At the same event, UNEP will release the latest study from the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) series – the organization’s flagship environmental assessment. The GEO-5 Guide for Policymakers will provide a preview of the overall GEO-5 assessment, which is set for release on World Environment Day, 5 June 2012. The rigorous scientific assessment analyses trends in the global environment, options for policy action to achieve internationally-agreed goals and solutions to current challenges.

Africa Launch of the United Nations 2012 International Year for Sustainable Energy for All

Sub-Saharan Africa has the world’s lowest rate of access to electricity. A new report from UNEP’s Finance Initiative will show that unlocking Sub-Saharan Africa’s massive renewable energy potential can help overcome this development challenge. The report will put forward recommendations
The report will be released to mark the Africa launch of the United Nations International Year of Sustainable Energy for All 2012; a UN-system wide effort that aims to ensure universal access to modern energy services and double both energy efficiency and the share of renewables in the global energy mix by 2030. UNEP’s Executive Director Achim Steiner will be joined by Adnan Amin, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and other experts.
The award ceremony for the UNEP Young Environmental Journalist Award (Africa) will also be held during the press conference.

Closing Press Conference & World Environment Day 2012 Announcement

Time: 1:00 – 2:00 pm, Wednesday 22 February
Venue: Press Centre, UNEP Headquarters, Gigiri
UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner and the Governing Council President Federico Ramos de Armas will give a briefing on the main decisions taken during the Governing Council. This will be followed by a special announcement regarding World Environment Day 2012.
