Do You Know a Clean Up Hero?
September 16, 2011 - As we celebrate Clean Up the World Weekend: September 16 -18, Clean Up is calling on participants to submit short videos celebrating the achievements of a local 'Clean Up Hero'.
The Weekend is an opportunity for community groups, schools, businesses, other organisations and individuals to take practical action for their local environment. With hundreds of activities taking place from Argentina to Algeria, Venezuela to Vietnam, the impact is global.
The Chairman and founder of Clean Up the World, Australian Ian Kiernan AO*, encourages participants to inspire a new generation of Clean Up heroes by sharing their stories through video.
"Last year, we had an estimated 35 million participants from over 130 countries take part in Clean Up the World activities - including tree planting, education, and recycling. That means we have 35 million heroes out there, and we want their stories to be heard," said Mr Kiernan.
"Clean Up the World inspires practical action in response to local problems. We know that our local members are the experts on their area and their community, and we encourage them to undertake activities that will provide the best local outcomes.
"In 2011 there's already 678 groups undertaking activities - 318 of which are taking place over the weekend.By sharing success stories our members can inspire each other as well as a new generation of Clean up the World participants."
Participants are encouraged to submit videos by uploading them to YouTube and emailing a link to Clean Up the World. Selected videos will be shared on the Clean Up the World website.
Clean Up the World Weekend, now in its 19th year, is held in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director praised communities participating in Clean Up the World for the important contribution they were making to improve the environment and mobilize positive local action.
"In 1992 more than 17,000 people came together at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to press for a pattern of development that recognizes the inextricable links between economy, society and environmental sustainability. With some nine months to go before Rio+20, Clean Up the World reminds us that Agenda 21 has found expression in countless communities and countries across the globe-the challenge for Rio+20 is to accelerate and scale-up such actions".
