About

Forests of the Earth (Bosques de la Tierra) Foundation is a non-profit organization located in Malaga, Spain. The Foundations works on reforestation and environmental education projects.

The Foundation carries out a voluntary reforestation programme implemented through individual and collective efforts. It is apolitical, secular and respective of diverse ideas. The programme is adapted according to national or local circumstances.

The objectives of Forests of the Earth are:

  • Raising public awareness about the importance of trees, forests and environment in general and public involvement in forest conservation.
  • Reforestation.
  • Other activities in support of forest conservation.

The programme was born in 1993 in Spain in the aftermath of a particularly hot and dry summer that had resulted in numerous forest fires, human and wildlife deaths.

The answer was to initiate a low-cost, grassroots reforestation programme which involves individuals, organizations, companies, as well as local and national governments.

In 1996, the Foundation received the prestigious Rolex Award for Enterprise, and has subsequently expanded the programme to 22 other countries.

Strategy

The programme includes the following components:

  • tree planting;
  • clean up of natural areas; and
  • prevention of forest fires.

The programme is implemented through voluntary "forest wardens" (Guardabosques Voluntarios). They are given training courses in forest monitoring.

The programme's motto is: "Each person is a voluntary forest warden".

Together with the Spanish Post Office, the Foundation also coordinates the "Green Envelope" initiative, the proceeds from the sales of these products are used to fund reforestation activities.
