About

The GLOBE Foundation is a Vancouver-based, not-for-profit organization dedicated to finding practical business-oriented solutions to the world's environmental problems.

Formed in 1993, we've helped companies and individuals realize the value of economically viable environmental business opportunities through our conferences and events, research and consulting, project management, communications and awards.

We're a leader in championing green initiatives and leveraging sustainable ventures into mutually rewarding opportunities for enterprise and the environment. From urban sustainability to climate change, we're helping change the world by degrees.

Strategy

GLOBE’s Climate Neutral Initiative seeks to reduce the emission of greenhouse gas emissions both from our own operations and from participants attending our events, through the implementation of energy conservation strategies and to offset remaining emissions to the greatest extent possible. Emission reductions will be achieved through both the direct purchase of emission reduction credits by the GLOBE Foundation and encouraging event attendees to voluntarily offset emissions. Voluntary purchases will be encouraged through communications targeted at specific participant groups.

The GLOBE Climate Neutral Initiative seeks to:

i) Reduce
the emissions of greenhouse gases generated due to the design and delivery of GLOBE™
events

* Implementation of a Sustainability Strategy in the office (recycling and reduction of waste, energy and water conservation efforts, including greening of computers and software, continuous education of GLOBE staff)

* Education of all GLOBE™ events participants (delegates, visitors and exhibitors) in ways to reduce their carbon footprint

* Reduce emissions due to staff travel by utilizing teleconferencing rather than air travel for local and global meetings and encouraging staff to use public transit or bikes to come to work

ii) Educate all involved with the event about the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions on climate change and actions that they can take at the individual level to mitigate their contributions to climate change

iii) Offset 100 per cent of emissions that are generated due to organizer travel, office energy use, venue energy use, speaker travel and exhibitor travel

iv) Offset 50 per cent of emissions generated due to all other attendee transportation to and from the event through encouraging voluntary purchases of emission reduction credits Voluntary purchases of emission
reduction credits are encouraged through:

1. Providing attendees with the option to offset their travel related emissions when registering for the conference

2.Providing visitors with the option to offset their travel related emissions when registering for the trade fair as well as incorporating information pertaining to the Climate Neutral Initiative into visitor passes for the trade fair

3. Providing a point of sale for emission reduction credits onsite during GLOBE™ events at the Sustainability Booth

4. Posting information about the initiative on the GLOBE™ event websites

5. Working with the selected offset credit provider to develop promotional information for their website

6. Including information about the initiative in communications developed for the GLOBE™ events Sustainability Initiative (both print and online) For GLOBE 2008, Ontario Power Generation donated carbon emission reduction credits for both staff travel and participant attendance.

At GLOBE 2008, The GLOBE Foundation implemented a carpool matching system in partnership with GreenRide to help attendees reduce their carbon footprint. The GLOBE Foundation encouraged
GLOBE 2008 exhibitors to make their displays as environmentally sustainable as possible with the suggestions of tips and ideas for reducing the environmental footprint of their exhibits.

For EPIC 2008, GLOBE implemented a sustainable meeting strategy, which we have coined the EPIC Sustainability Initiative.
Exhibitors were also encouraged to make their exhibit sustainable via an EPIC Exhibitor Sustainability Guide and Offsetters Climate Neutral Society were the offset providers of choice. All participants were also given guidelines for making their visit sustainable. In accordance with a Sustainable Procurement Strategy, GLOBE endeavours to make environmentally, socially and economically conscious choices
when purchasing products or services: in particular, we buy organic products for our kitchen and we print all our documents on FSC certified, 100 per cent post-consumer recycled paper. We also provide a Save-a-Tree® eco-audit on our major publications (conference program, trade fair guide, and event review.)

In 2007, The GLOBE Foundation won the IMEX Green Meeting Industry Council Gold Medal for Excellence in Green Meeting Planning and Innovation for the World Urban Forum

3. In addition, sustainable practices and procedures were implemented in partnership with the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to make EECO 2007 a Zero Waste Event. Through our stewardship, 98.5 per cent of reusable materials were diverted from being sent to a landfill site.
