Norwegian Golf Federation [ About] [Strategy] [Photo Gallery]

About

The Norwegian Golf Federation (NGF) was founded in 1948.  Today NGF has 122 000 members, twice as many as in 1997.  This makes NGF the third biggest of all sport federations in Norway, after football and skiing. During the 1990s the golf sport has received a major boost in membership in Norway with around 20 per cent annual growth compared to the annual growth rate of under 10 per cent in the beginning of the new century. Today 12.7 per cent of the members are under 18 years old and 27.3 per cent are women.

Key figures:

· Established in 1948

· Member of the Norwegian Sports Federation and the Olympic Committee

· Third largest sports federation in Norway

· 12.7 per cent of members are youth/children and 27.3  per cent are women.

Strategy

The Norwegian Golf Federation (NGF) would like through their key role in the golf sport in Norway to serve as a good example on how environmental focus and climate neutrality can be implemented in a sport organization.

Golf is not an environmental protection measure in itself, but through the management of the golf courses the sport has a unique opportunity to address and raise awareness on many environmental issues like water, energy, pollution, waste treatment, cultural heritage, smaller eco-systems, and flora and fauna. It is a goal for us to show that golf courses can serve as good examples on how sustainable area planning is creating modern cultural landscapes that takes care of the environment and contribute
to environmental knowledge and awareness raising.

We have decided to become a climate neutral organization from 2009, following the UN guidelines to climate neutrality: “Kick the Habit” through the following steps:

1. Decision

2. Measure our footprint - We will measure our emissions of greenhouse gases in 2008 as a baseline, using the Green House Gas protocol principles

3. Reduce – We will set goals for reducing the emissions in the years to come

4. Offset – We will purchase offsets to compensate for the remaining emissions from the UN Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), starting
from 2009.

5. Inform and Inspire - We will inform and inspire, in particular our members and other sport federations to show similar responsibility.

6. Repeat – We will go through this cycle again on an annual basis
