About
The name of the city (Aguascalientes means “hot waters” in Spanish) comes from the abundance of thermal water in this zone.
Its foundation by royal decree in 1575, under the name of “Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de las Aguas Calientes”, was mainly due to the necessity to give shelter, refuge and protection to the travelers that passed by the “Ruta de la Plata” – the Silver Road.
Today, Aguascalientes City is the capital of eponymous state and is located in the north central region of Mexico.
The city is located at an altitude of1,867 metres and enjoys a semi-desert climate with 611.8 millimeters of average annual precipitation and the mean annual temperature of 18.2°C.
The city population is 663,671 which represents 62.29% of the state population. The city covers the surface of 115.87 square kilometers – nearly 10% of the state´s surface.
