About

Daejeon is the fifth largest city in Korea. After being completely destroyed during the Korean War, Daejeon was raised from the ashes to become a modern and technologically advanced metropolitan city. Today it has close to 1.5 million residents, spans approximately 540km2 and incluides extensive green coverage.

The city is situated among four mountains which form a large valley. Three major rivers pass through the city. Daejeon boasts a number of natural and man-made scenic sights including Jangtaesan recreational forest, Daecheongho Lake Park, Yuseong Hot Springs, and Expo Park. The city enjoys a continental climate with an average annual temperature of 12.1 degrees Celsius and an average annual rainfall of 1,350mm.

Daejeon does not have a lot of energy-consuming industries, with the service industry being the predominant one. Households account for the majority of the city’s energy consumption and related greenhouse gas emissions, followed by GHG emissions from transport and industry.

Strategy

Under the overall vision of a “Low Carbon, Green City”, Daejeon's climate change response plan focuses on 10 top priority tasks:
1.Building capacity to respond to climate change;
2.Creating an evergreen eco-city;
3.Turning waste into energy resource;

“Happy river” project;

1.Promoting new renewable energy sources;
2.Creating a low-energy-consuming society;
3.Promoting cycling: “A good city to ride a bicycle” project;
4.Promoting public transport;
5.Promoting low-carbon vehicles; and
6.Developing carbon accounting and trading schemes. 

Top-priority Task 1: Building Capacity to Respond to Climate Change 

  • Calculating greenhouse gas emissions and studying ways how to reduce them 
  • Making public organizations purchase eco-friendly goods compulsory
    CDM project through LFG station
  • Establishment of a Green-start Network and a Green Growth Forum
    Enactment of ordinances to respond to climate change

  • 30 million-trees-planting campaign
